When is the best time to take GLP-1 injection doses? The FDA labels for Wegovy, Ozempic, Zepbound and Mounjaro do not name a best hour. They say to inject once weekly, at any time of day, with or without meals. The Wegovy and Ozempic labels add “on the same day each week.” So the best time, as far as the labels go, is a time you can keep every week. If you need to move your shot day, each label sets a minimum gap between two doses, and that gap differs by product.

Key points

How often you inject semaglutide and tirzepatide

How often do you inject semaglutide? Once a week. The Wegovy injection and Ozempic labels both say once weekly, on the same day each week. The Zepbound and Mounjaro (tirzepatide) labels also say once weekly. Their Medication Guides phrase it as “1 time each week, at any time of the day.”

The Zepbound and Mounjaro multi-dose KwikPen Instructions for Use even include a small calendar where you write the day of the week you chose and the dates you inject. That is a hint about how the manufacturers think about timing: a fixed weekly day, recorded.

One note on Wegovy: its label now also covers a Wegovy tablet, taken once daily with its own rules about the morning, an empty stomach and water. This article covers the weekly injection only.

The best time to take a GLP-1 injection, per the labels

Here is what each current label says about timing:

ProductHow oftenTime of dayMealsMinimum gap if you change your day
Wegovy injectionOnce weekly, same day each weekAny timeWith or withoutLast dose 2 or more days before (Medication Guide)
OzempicOnce weekly, same day each weekAny timeWith or withoutAt least 2 days (more than 48 hours) between doses
ZepboundOnce weeklyAny timeWith or withoutAt least 3 days (72 hours) between doses
MounjaroOnce weeklyAny timeWith or withoutAt least 3 days (72 hours) between doses

The Wegovy prescribing information adds one more detail: the time of day and the injection site can be changed without changing the dose. So a morning shot one week and an evening shot the next is within the label, as long as the weekly day holds.

None of the labels say that morning or night works better, or that injecting with food changes anything. If you have a reason to prefer a time, for example how you feel in the day or two after a shot, that is a good topic for your prescriber. Your prescriber and pharmacist set your plan.

How to change your weekly day, per the label

Life changes: a new job, travel, a different routine. The labels allow you to move your day, with a minimum gap.

A worked example, using only the label rule: say you inject Zepbound on Saturday and want to switch to Monday. Monday comes 2 days after Saturday, which is less than the 3-day gap. Tuesday is the first day that meets the 72-hour minimum. If you want to move earlier in the week, ask your pharmacist how to make the switch within your label. Moving a day is different from missing one, so check with your prescriber or pharmacist if you are unsure which one applies.

When you miss the day

Each label has a separate missed-dose window. For Ozempic it is 5 days, for Zepbound and Mounjaro 4 days, and for Wegovy injection it depends on whether your next dose is more than 2 days away. The details and what the labels say about two or more missed doses are in missed a GLP-1 dose? what to read first.

Practical ways to pick a day and time

These are habits, not medical rules. The label rules above come first.

When to call a clinician

Call your prescriber or pharmacist if you are unsure when your next dose is due, if you injected twice in a week by mistake, or if you are not sure your pen delivered the full dose.

When to call: The Medication Guides for all four medicines say to stop using the medicine and call your healthcare provider right away for severe stomach pain that will not go away, with or without vomiting. They say to get medical help right away for signs of a serious allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, or problems breathing or swallowing.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to take a GLP-1 injection?

The labels for Wegovy, Ozempic, Zepbound and Mounjaro say any time of day, with or without meals, once weekly. The Wegovy and Ozempic labels add “on the same day each week.” Pick a time you can keep every week.

How often do you inject semaglutide?

Once weekly. The Wegovy injection and Ozempic labels say to inject on the same day each week, at any time of day.

Is it better to inject GLP-1 in the morning or at night?

The labels do not say one is better. The Wegovy label says the time of day can change without changing the dose. If you have a reason to prefer one, ask your prescriber.

Can I change the day of my weekly shot?

Yes, within the label’s gap. The Ozempic label and the Wegovy Medication Guide say at least 2 days between doses. The Zepbound and Mounjaro labels say at least 3 days (72 hours).

Never lose track of your shot day

Dosinha’s weekly reminder fires on the day you choose, and the shot log keeps the date and site of each dose. If you move your day, you can look back at the date of your last shot before you check the gap with your label and your pharmacist. The shot log and reminders are free. Set up your free reminder.
