A workable GLP-1 diet plan is a rhythm more than a menu: small meals at regular times, protein at each one, steady fluids, and a weekly look at what worked. Experts writing in a 2025 joint advisory describe small meals every 3 to 4 hours and nutrient-dense, minimally processed foods. They describe principles rather than a fixed menu, and we cannot write one for you either, because your medicine, dose, health history and tolerance are yours alone. Use the structure below to organize a plan you build with your prescriber or a dietitian.

What a plan can and cannot do

A plan gives you something to default to on days when you are not hungry and not thinking about food. It cannot promise a weight result. How much weight a person changes depends on the medicine, the dose, how long they take it and many personal factors, and your prescriber is the right person to talk about that. This page is about eating well while on the medicine, not about a target number.

The daily rhythm

Build the day around three habits the advisory describes.

1. Regular small meals

The advisory suggests a small breakfast followed by small meals every 3 to 4 hours, and warns against very large meals and long gaps without eating. A day might be three small meals and one or two small snacks. Your own number will differ.

2. A protein food at each meal

The 2025 to 2030 Dietary Guidelines for Americans say to prioritize protein foods at every meal and name eggs, poultry, seafood, beans, lentils, nuts, seeds and soy among the options. The joint advisory calls sufficient protein a priority too. How many grams is a question for your care team. We explain why in protein on a GLP-1.

3. Fluids through the day

The Wegovy prescribing information says it is important to drink fluids to reduce the chance of dehydration, which can lead to kidney problems. Sip across the day. GLP-1 drinks covers ideas.

If you tend to forget meals, the advisory says an alarm or other reminder to eat can help.

The weekly rhythm

Here is a way to organize seven days without prescribing food.

WhenWhat to focus on
Shot day and the day afterSimple, lighter meals. See what to eat on shot day.
One prep sessionCook one or two protein foods and wash and chop vegetables so small meals are quick.
Mid-weekNotice what you skipped or could not finish, and what sat badly.
Any dayAdd some fiber gradually and drink fluids with it. See GLP-1 and fiber.
Before an appointmentReview your notes and write down questions.

Move, too

The advisory says these medicines should be prescribed together with a structured exercise program, aiming for strength training at least three times a week plus at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity a week. That is the advisory’s stated aim for a general population, so ask your prescriber what suits you. Read more in GLP-1 and muscle loss.

Sample day structure

This is an example of timing only. Swap in foods you tolerate. For specific ideas, see GLP-1 foods, GLP-1 meals and recipes and GLP-1 snacks.

If you want a full week laid out, our GLP-1 meal plan gives a 7-day sample framework.

What to keep out of the plan

The advisory suggests minimizing refined carbohydrates, sugar-sweetened beverages, red and processed meats, most fast food, and ultraprocessed sweets and savory snacks, and says alcohol may worsen nausea and reflux. For nausea, it also suggests avoiding fatty or high-fiber foods during the first few days of treatment. Notice how you react instead of banning anything outright.

Make it yours with a dietitian

The advisory describes registered dietitian nutritionists as able to help with food choices, meal timing and goal setting. It also notes that insurance coverage for dietitian visits for obesity is limited in the US. A single visit to review this structure can still be useful.

When to call a clinician

According to the Wegovy prescribing information, tell your healthcare provider right away if nausea, vomiting or diarrhea does not go away, and tell them about severe stomach problems. The label lists severe abdominal pain that may spread to the back, with or without vomiting, as a possible sign of pancreatitis. Your prescriber and pharmacist set your plan.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a free GLP-1 diet plan?

This page is free and gives a structure you can fill in. A personal plan with specific amounts should come from your prescriber or a dietitian, since we do not know your health history.

Can a diet plan make the medicine work better?

We did not find evidence that a specific plan changes how well the medicine works. The joint advisory says the effects of dietary patterns on maximizing weight reduction with these medicines need more study.

How many meals a day should I eat?

The advisory suggests small meals about every 3 to 4 hours. How many that is for you depends on your appetite and your care team’s advice.

Should I change my plan on a higher dose?

Ask your prescriber. Appetite and side effects can change after a dose change, and a dietitian can help you adapt.

Check in once a week

A weekly review works best when you have notes. Dosinha lets you log your shot, water and how you feel, with protein and fiber targets you can set, so you can notice patterns and share them with your prescriber or dietitian. Take a look at the free tools.
