Yes, some GLP-1 medicines are FDA-approved for weight management in people who do not have diabetes. Wegovy (semaglutide) and Zepbound (tirzepatide) are labeled to reduce excess body weight and keep it off long term in adults with obesity, or with overweight plus at least one weight-related condition. Ozempic and Mounjaro contain the same ingredients but are labeled for type 2 diabetes. For GLP-1 weight loss, non diabetic adults were the main group studied: the key trials excluded diabetes. Whether any of these medicines fits you is a decision for you and your prescriber.

Key points

This page is part of our series on GLP-1 average weight loss per week, which explains how fast weight changed in those trials.

Which labels cover weight management

MedicineIngredientWhat the FDA label covers (summary)
Wegovy injectionsemaglutideReduce excess body weight and maintain it long term in adults and children 12 and older with obesity, and adults with overweight plus a weight-related condition. Also reduce the risk of major heart events in adults with heart disease and obesity or overweight, and treat a type of liver disease (MASH) with moderate to advanced fibrosis.
Wegovy tabletssemaglutideWeight reduction and long-term maintenance in adults, plus heart risk reduction in adults with heart disease.
ZepboundtirzepatideReduce excess body weight and maintain it long term in adults with obesity, or overweight plus a weight-related condition. Also moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea in adults with obesity.
OzempicsemaglutideBlood sugar control and heart and kidney risk reduction in adults with type 2 diabetes.
MounjarotirzepatideBlood sugar control in adults and children 10 and older with type 2 diabetes, and heart risk reduction in adults with type 2 diabetes at high risk.

All of these labels say to use the medicine together with a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity, or diet and exercise. The Wegovy and Zepbound labels also say not to combine them with other medicines that contain the same ingredient or with any other GLP-1 medicine.

What “obesity or overweight with a condition” meant in the trials

The labels use the words obesity and overweight. The trials behind them spelled it out. STEP 1 and SURMOUNT-1 enrolled adults with a BMI of 30 or more, or 27 or more with at least one weight-related condition. In the Wegovy label, examples of such conditions include treated or untreated high blood pressure and abnormal blood fats (dyslipidemia). People with diabetes were excluded from both trials.

People search for how to qualify for semaglutide for weight loss. The label describes who the medicine is approved for; your prescriber applies it to your health history, other medicines and goals. Your prescriber and pharmacist set your plan.

What the trials in people without diabetes found

Trial (population)TimepointMean weight change
STEP 1: semaglutide 2.4 mg, 1,961 adults without diabetesWeek 68Down 14.9% vs 2.4% on placebo
SURMOUNT-1: tirzepatide 5, 10 or 15 mg, 2,539 adults without diabetesWeek 72Down 15.0%, 19.5% and 20.9% vs 3.1% on placebo

For comparison, the labels also report trials in adults with type 2 diabetes and overweight or obesity:

Trial in type 2 diabetes (from the label)TimepointMean weight change
Wegovy Study 3: semaglutide 2.4 mg, 807 adultsWeek 68Down 9.6% vs 3.4% on placebo
Zepbound Study 2: tirzepatide 10 or 15 mgWeek 72Down 12.8% and 14.7% vs 3.2% on placebo

The pattern is the same for both ingredients: average loss was lower with type 2 diabetes. The 2025 joint nutrition advisory on GLP-1 therapy notes the same gap outside trials: in real-world use of semaglutide 2.4 mg, about 8% with diabetes and 11% without diabetes at 60 weeks, lower than in the trials. These are group averages from different trials, not predictions for anyone.

Heart outcomes in people without diabetes

SELECT tested semaglutide 2.4 mg in 17,604 adults aged 45 or older with existing heart or blood vessel disease, a BMI of 27 or more, and no history of diabetes. Over a mean follow-up of 39.8 months, a heart attack, stroke or heart-related death occurred in 6.5% of the semaglutide group and 8.0% of the placebo group. That result is why the Wegovy label includes a heart risk reduction indication for people with established heart disease. It does not apply to people without heart disease.

Type 1 diabetes

People with type 1 diabetes also ask whether they can take a GLP-1 for weight loss. The Wegovy label says its use in people with type 1 diabetes or together with insulin has not been evaluated. Ozempic and Mounjaro are labeled for type 2 diabetes. If you have type 1 diabetes, ask your diabetes care team.

Side effects are the same story with or without diabetes

The most common label side effects are stomach-related, such as nausea, diarrhea and constipation. Low blood sugar is mainly a risk with type 2 diabetes plus insulin or a sulfonylurea, according to the Wegovy Medication Guide. For how side effects tend to change over the first weeks, see our GLP-1 side effects timeline.

When to call a clinician

When to call: severe stomach pain that will not go away, with or without vomiting, sometimes spreading to the back. Upper stomach pain with fever, yellow skin or eyes, or clay-colored stools. Nausea, vomiting or diarrhea that does not go away, which can lead to dehydration and kidney problems. Swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, or trouble breathing or swallowing: get medical help right away.

These come from the Wegovy Medication Guide and the Zepbound label. The list is not complete. When something feels wrong, call your prescriber, a pharmacist or local emergency services.

Frequently asked questions

Can you take a GLP-1 for weight loss if you are not diabetic?

Wegovy and Zepbound are FDA-approved for weight management in adults with obesity, or overweight with a weight-related condition, whether or not they have diabetes. Their main weight trials enrolled only people without diabetes. Your prescriber decides whether one fits you.

Is Ozempic approved for weight loss in non-diabetics?

No. The Ozempic label covers adults with type 2 diabetes. Wegovy contains the same ingredient, semaglutide, and is the semaglutide product labeled for weight management.

Do non-diabetics lose more weight on GLP-1 medicines?

In the trials reported in the Wegovy and Zepbound labels, average loss was larger in people without diabetes. For semaglutide 2.4 mg it was 14.9% at 68 weeks without diabetes and 9.6% with type 2 diabetes. Individuals varied widely.

Can type 1 diabetics take a GLP-1 for weight loss?

The Wegovy label says use in type 1 diabetes has not been evaluated. That makes it a question for your diabetes care team.

Keep your own record

If you and your prescriber decide to start, a simple record helps you both see how it is going. Dosinha’s free shot log, weight log and side-effect check-ins help you keep that record and notice patterns to share at your visits. The app does not decide anything about your treatment.
